What about Fair Trade rather than Free Trade Prime Minister? Fair Trade is when importers compete on the same playing field as our producers and businesses. This means the same interest rates; currencies at parity; no government subsidies; strict anti-dumping rules; same corporate tax rates; same growing conditions and quality control standards required of our producers and manufacturers; labelling laws show where products really come from; same wage rates and conditions as our workers; import controls on diseases that can destroy our capacity to feed ourselves; Government Procurement prioritises local business and jobs. Free Trade is when it is not a level playing field on any of the above and we export jobs, and sell our wealth creating assets to foreign interests who do not pay the same taxes as our companies, send profits off shore before tax, and make decisions overseas about what happens here. Implement Fair Trade Prime Minister and Australian owned businesses wanting to create jobs and reinvest assets here will do what they have always done. They will “have a go”. Give us a Fair Go.
In response the Australian’s page 1 12/4/2011 PM commits to free trade path.
